Same as the wheat field. Food was scarce for a hundred thousand years, and then, in a few places on earth, people worked out how to plant it. Information stayed scarce for millennia after that. When it broke open, Johannes Gutenberg, a goldsmith in Mainz, pressed movable letters onto paper, and by 1517 Martin Luther had nailed ninety-five complaints to a church door that nobody could take back. Energy was scarce until we learned to crack the earth open. Four times now, a scarce thing has become abundant, and four times the people standing inside the change could not see it. What AI is building is the fourth case, and it is the first one where the people who read the pattern early get to lead it instead of reading about it later.
Every time a scarce resource became abundant, the structures built on that scarcity collapsed. The pattern held for food, then information, then energy. Intelligence is the fourth case, and this time the stages that used to arrive generations apart are arriving inside the same decade. The argument over what to call the thing has already started.
The pattern, and the lie in the old ladder
The pattern holds everywhere it is found. A resource that was hoarded becomes available. The people holding it resist. The structures built on that scarcity fall, and whatever rises in its place is invisible from where everyone is standing.
Scarcity is architecture. Every scarce thing is a load-bearing wall in the structure of a civilisation. Abundance removes the load, and everything built on that wall falls, because it was never standing on the ground. The church fell to a machine that made its one product, knowledge, cheap. The aristocracy fell to a fuel that made its one asset, land and the labour on it, irrelevant.
The common telling gets the shape wrong. History is usually arranged as one ladder that everyone climbed in order: farming, then writing, then printing, then industry. That ladder is a single biography wearing the costume of a universal law. Farming and cities and writing did not start in one place and spread outward. They ignited independently, in several places, around the same time, across Mesopotamia, the Indus valley, Egypt, and China. The Indus valley was laying out grid streets and covered drains by about 2,600 BCE, while most of the world still lived in villages. The transitions are real. The ladder is a story. The people at the front of any transition were never the ones who followed the rules. They moved before the shape of the thing was visible.
Together the three numbers compress the history. Every transition waited generations to be understood. The waiting is shrinking.
The three clocks behind every transition
Every one of these events ran three clocks at once, and the clocks always finish in the same order.
The change clock is the moment ordinary life starts to feel different. The collapse clock is the moment the old institution structurally falls. The comprehension clock is the moment we can finally name what happened. Change comes first, then collapse, then understanding. That order has never once reversed.
| Transition | First ignition | Finally named |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | Multiple regions, from about 10,000 BCE | 1936 |
| Printing | Mainz, about 1450 | 20th century |
| Industrial power | Britain, about 1769 | 1884 |
| Intelligence | Everywhere, from 2022 | Being fought over now |
For twelve thousand years the name arrived late, because nobody had the language for it. This time the name is arriving early, and it is arriving from the top.
Why nobody sees what AI is building
On 29 September 2026, the White House signed Executive Order 14434 and directed the executive branch to stop using the term artificial intelligence altogether.
Directs all departments and agencies to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, policy documents, and non-statutory documents within the executive branch and to no longer acknowledge the terms “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI”.
Executive Order 14434, The White House, 29 September 2026
The order sets policy and asks for a Federal definition, but its operative move is a single noun. A government with unmatched power spent its authority on a rename. The church fought the press. The aristocracy fought the vote. Both reached for the word last, because the word was the only thing they could still hold. Watch what the powerful insist on calling things. The insistence marks the wall.
What this means if you are the one building
If the pattern holds, the next equilibrium will be set by the people making the thing while the argument runs, most of them without a word for what they are doing.
The scarce resource has moved three times, and it has just moved again. Food gave way to time. Knowledge gave way to coordination. When coal and oil made energy cheap, the constraint moved to command. Now intelligence is becoming cheap, and the binding constraint has moved past access to a capable mind. What is scarce is judgement about what a capable mind should be pointed at, and that sits in trust and taste.
Every generation has had one large advantage available: the ability to see where the constraint had just moved, and to stand there first. The technology everyone was staring at was rarely the point. This is that moment, and it is unusually legible. Most of the people acting on it are not in a lab. They are in a shop, or a rented room with unreliable power, working on something they cannot yet explain to anyone. The wall is moving in plain sight, and the name is still unwritten. The people who move now are reading a pattern that has repeated four times. Reading a pattern is a decision.
What this framing does not settle
The three clocks are a compression, not a law of nature. Every date above depends on which milestone you pick, and a historian can move the farming figure by thousands of years simply by redefining the city. Treat the sequence as the claim and the individual years as illustration.
The compression may not continue. It is just as reasonable to read this moment as the one where coordination, regulation, and trust slow the transition back down. The pattern says a constraint migrates. It does not promise the migration keeps getting faster.
Naming is not controlling. A state can install a word and still lose the structure the word describes, which is precisely what happened to the church. Do not read a rename as a victory for either side.
Conclusion: the scarce thing is now the name
The scarce resource has moved once more. What is scarce now is the vocabulary. Whoever names what AI is building during the collapse sets the terms of what rises after it.
Every previous transition was understood by people who arrived too late to shape it. This is the first one where the comprehension clock might finish while the change is still running, which means the reader of today stands where no wheat farmer ever stood.
Same as the wheat field. Same as the press. Same as the coal. Except this time, the ceiling lifts in plain sight, and the ones who see it first get to lead. Build with that in view. Start building on OpenCraft AI.
